Influence of Optical Microwave Mixing on Conversion of FM-to-intensity Noise in Microwave Modulated Interferometric Systems

In this paper, an analysis of optical mixing of microwave signals on conversion of the noise power spectral density (NPSD), using a directly modulated semiconductor laser and an interferometer to convert frequency modulation into intensity modulation is introduced. The results show the influence of the modulation index and modulation frequency in an optical link by considering optical mixing.

It is observed that the components frequencies of noise power spectral density in the output of the unbalance Mach-Zehnder interferometer (UMZI) for microwave (MW) optical transmission strongly depend on the arms length difference.
